How to See the Cherry Blossoms in the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park

The cherry blossoms at the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park are in full bloom right now. I was especially excited to visit because I just finished a Hanami Cherry Blossom Unit Study with my kids, and it felt so meaningful to experience it together in the garden.

We visited on Thursday, March 19 2026 and were able to walk right in and enjoy the space. When we returned Friday morning, there was a line to enter and tickets were already sold out.

I didn’t think to book tickets in advance since San Francisco residents can usually walk in for free, but during peak bloom it is definitely something to plan ahead for.

How to get tickets to see the cherry blossoms at the Japanese Tea Garden

  1. Go to the Japanese Tea Garden website and reserve a timed ticket
  2. Arrive within the hour of your reservation to check in and enter

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to reserve tickets in advance

No, reservations are not always required, but during peak times you may not be able to enter if tickets are sold out.

Can San Francisco residents still get free admission?

Yes, you can reserve tickets online and show proof of San Francisco residency at the entrance.

Can you still use Museums for All?

Yes, you can reserve tickets online, select Museums for All, and show proof at the admission window.

Tickets are sold out. Where else can I see cherry blossoms?

If you are already in the park, visit Lindley Meadow or the road near the Bison Paddock for additional cherry blossom trees. I will also be sharing a more detailed guide on the blog this weekend with more locations throughout Golden Gate Park.
