6 Kid-Friendly Things to Do at Petco Park (Beyond Baseball!)

Earlier this month, my sister, an avid Padres fan, took us to a game at Petco Park, and I was honestly surprised by how many kid-friendly things there are to do there. It’s not just a baseball stadium, it’s a full family outing.

From playgrounds to mini ballparks to the Padres Hall of Fame, Petco Park has something for all ages. Every staff member we interacted with was kind and accommodating. They handed out baseball cards, answered our kids’ questions, and made the whole experience extra special. I just wish we had arrived earlier to enjoy everything before the first pitch!

Here are our favorite family-friendly things to do at Petco Park:

1. Pick Up a Free “First Game” Pin

Petco First Game Pin

If it’s your child’s first visit, don’t miss the chance to grab a free “First Game” pin. You can get one from Guest Services or the Team Store.

My kids wore theirs proudly throughout the game and all the way home. It’s a simple souvenir that helps commemorate the day and makes kids feel celebrated.

Tip: Ask for it when you first arrive so your child can enjoy it during the game.

2. Climb and Slide at the Big Kid Playground (Gallagher Square)

Gallagher Square Nuna Playground

This massive playground is unlike anything I’ve seen at a stadium or even most parks. Nicknamed the “big kid playground” in our family, it’s a two-story adventure zone featuring:

  • Three large slides
  • A suspended boardwalk
  • Rope bridges
  • Climbing nets and towers
  • A 35-foot climbable “Bay” sculpture

It’s fenced in, but because of its size and layout, it’s easy to lose sight of kids. We gave our almost-four-year-old a lot of freedom, but this playground is really best for confident climbers and independent kids.

Location: Gallagher Square
Tip: Closed-toe shoes are best. Stay near the exit so you can keep an eye on your child.

3. Enjoy the Toddler-Friendly Playground

Right next to the big kid area, the “little kid playground” offers a more accessible space for younger children.

  • Three metal slides built into a turf hill
  • A low climbing rope
  • Baseball-themed statues that kids can hop across

This space is ideal for toddlers and preschoolers. Our five-year-old loved the challenge of the statues and called them his own obstacle course.

Location: Gallagher Square
Tip: It gets sunny, so bring a hat or some shade for little ones.

4. Run the Bases at Junior Padres Park

Petco Park Kids Ball Park

Also in Gallagher Square, this mini baseball diamond is a dream come true for little fans. Kids can hit the ball, run the bases, and let loose in a safe space.

On busy game days, staff often lead activities and help guide kids through the field.

Location: Gallagher Square
Tip: The line to bat can get long, so visit early or between innings.

5. Visit the Padres Hall of Fame

If your kids or teens enjoy baseball history, the Padres Hall of Fame is worth a visit. This indoor exhibit showcases team legends like:

  • Tony Gwynn
  • Trevor Hoffman
  • Ted Williams (a San Diego native)

The displays include interactive elements and memorabilia that appeal to kids and adults alike.

Location: Near the left field entrance
Tip: A great place to cool off if it’s hot outside or to escape a rare rainy day.

6. Say Hi to the Pups at the Dog Park

Petco Park San Diego Dog Park

Yes, there is an actual dog park inside Petco Park. On special “Bark at the Park” days, fans can bring their dogs to the game. There’s even a fenced-off dog run in Gallagher Square.

This area kept our toddler entertained for quite a while, just watching the dogs run around.

Location: Gallagher Square
Tip: Visit early or during quieter moments in the game for a calmer experience.

Bonus Tip: Arrive Early

There is a lot to see and do before the first pitch. Arriving early means:

  • Shorter lines
  • Better parking
  • More time to explore Gallagher Square and play

Gates usually open 90 minutes before game time. Next time we visit, we’ll be there as soon as the gates open so the kids can get their energy out before sitting through the game.
