If you are looking for a free, easy, and fun way to enjoy summer nights in San Francisco, Blankets and Blockbusters at Thrive City should be on your list. This outdoor movie series takes place just outside Chase Center and offers a relaxed community vibe, big screen favorites, and plenty of room to stretch out and unwind with your family.
Our family attended a past screening of The Princess and the Frog, and the experience was so magical we had to share it. While this year’s movie selections are geared more toward teens and nostalgic classics, the event still delivers that special San Francisco sparkle.
What is Blankets and Blockbusters?
Blankets and Blockbusters is a free outdoor movie series at Thrive City, the plaza in front of the Chase Center. Throughout the summer, families, teens, and groups of friends gather on the plaza lawn to enjoy classic films under the stars. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or low lawn chairs, and each movie night includes themed pre-show entertainment or activities.
It is a casual, safe, and welcoming event that makes a summer night in the city feel more like a neighborhood block party.
What to Expect
The event takes place at Thrive City, located at 1 Warriors Way in San Francisco. Admission is free, but RSVPs are encouraged and can be made through ChaseCenter.com.
Gates typically open about 90 minutes before the movie starts, with films beginning around sunset. We recommend arriving early to claim a good spot, especially if you are coming with a group. Bring a blanket, picnic snacks, and plenty of layers since it gets chilly by the Bay once the sun goes down.
On-site, you will find restrooms, friendly staff, and lots of nearby food options including Gott’s Roadside, Dumpling Time, and Shake Shack.
Pre-Movie Activities
One of the highlights of Blankets and Blockbusters is the pre-movie fun that sets the tone for a festive evening. Arriving early not only helps you find a good viewing spot, but also gives you a chance to enjoy themed activities before the film begins.
Each movie night typically includes a variety of family-friendly stations. In the past, these have included:
- Face Painting – Kids can choose from a variety of themed designs, from frogs and stars to tiaras and masks.
- Craft Tables – Hands-on activities such as making paper crowns, puppets, or other themed crafts are available for children of all ages.
- Trivia Games – Movie-themed trivia is often played over the speakers before showtime. There are no prizes, but it is a fun way to test your knowledge and build excitement.
- Photo Backdrops – Guests can take pictures with themed props in front of a custom backdrop inspired by the movie of the night.
These activities are free, well-organized, and designed to engage children and adults alike. They help create a festive atmosphere and make the event feel more like a community celebration than just a movie screening.
Our Experience: The Princess and the Frog
Although this summer’s lineup leans toward an older crowd, last year’s screening of The Princess and the Frog was a dream come true for families with young kids.
Before the movie started, there was a lively pre-show atmosphere with several fun activity stations. Our kids loved making frog puppets and sparkly paper crowns at the craft table. Free face painting was available, with designs that included frogs, stars, and tiaras. There was also a themed photo booth with New Orleans-style props and a backdrop inspired by the movie.
As families settled in on blankets and lawn chairs, Disney trivia played over the speakers. There were no prizes, but it was still a fun way to pass the time and get everyone excited for the show. Once the movie started, the screen was crisp and bright, the sound was clear, and the crowd was engaged and relaxed. It was one of our favorite memories of the summer.
2025 Summer Screenings
This year’s lineup has a slightly different vibe, with movies that appeal more to tweens, teens, and nostalgic adults. Here are the next two screenings in the series:
Friday, July 19 – Wicked
Celebrate the beloved Broadway musical ahead of the new film release. Expect a crowd of theater fans, themed decor, and a lively atmosphere.
Friday, August 15 – 10 Things I Hate About You
A 90s teen rom-com classic that still holds up. Perfect for a date night or an outing with older kids and teens.
Keep an eye on the Chase Center event page for any schedule updates or new additions.

Final Thoughts
Blankets and Blockbusters is a simple yet special way to enjoy summer in San Francisco. It is one of those rare events that feels easy and memorable at the same time. Whether you are reliving a teen classic or introducing your kids to a favorite musical, it is a fun and free night out in the city.
We are already looking forward to the next movie night and hope to see more family-friendly films return to the lineup in future seasons. Until then, we will be there with snacks, blankets, and a front-row seat to the stars.
