Use this fun dice and dot math game to work on counting, adding, subtracting and fine motor movement with your preschool or kindergarten aged child.
My preschoolers love St. Patrick’s Day. I will be incorporating a St. Patrick’s Day theme in this game by drawing a shamrock shape to dot out.
I played counting and addition game with my 3 and 4 -year-old children. I think this game is perfect for the 3-6-year-old age range and can be made more difficult for older children.
Materials
These are the three items we used to play the game. The materials I used are high-quality and easy to adapt for other projects.
I purchased my dot art markers from amazon. They are a little expensive, but I think they are totally worth it! We have been using our set of dot markers for three years now and they work just as well as the day we bought them.
The large foam dice came from dollar tree, but amazon carries a similar item.
The large paper we used for this project is 25″x30″ easel paper a neighbor was throwing out. I am sure a paper roll or any other large piece of scrap paper would also work well.
Feel free to use what you have on hand. I did! Dot stickers and stamps as well as regular dice can easily be substituted for the materials I used.
I just enrolled in the Amazon Associates program and some of the links in this post are affiliate links. I hope they help you find the resources you need to play the game.
Counting Game
In this game you will use 1 piece of paper, 1 die, and dot markers of your color choice.
- Draw a large line or shape on your paper. (I drew a shamrock for Saint Patrick’s Day)
- Let your youngest kid roll the die first.
- They will make a dot along the line for the number they rolled
- Repeat the step for each player
- The player that makes the final dot wins if you’re playing competitively
I recommend using 1 color per player, if you are playing the game competitively. My son prefers changing colors, so we changed colors every turn.

Addition Game
This game is like the counting game, but you will use 2 dice instead of 1 die.
You will need 1 piece of paper, 2 die, dot markers of your color choice.
- Draw a large line or shape on your paper.
- Roll the dice and add the numbers together.
- Make as many dots along the line as you the number that was rolled
- Repeat the step for each player
- The player that makes the final dot wins if you’re playing competitively
Subtraction Game
The subtraction game should be done by 2 people or 2 teams.
You will need 1 piece of paper, 1 die for each player, and dot markers.
- Draw a large line or shape on your paper.
- Each player will roll a die to “battle”
- Subtract the larger number from the smaller number
- The player with the larger number will make dot for the difference between the 2 die numbers.
- Repeat the step until the line is filled with dots
- The player that makes the final dot wins
Subtraction Game Modified for Teams
How to play the subtraction game as a team
- Group the kids in teams of 2 or 3 players
- Each player rolls a die each turn.
- Add the numbers rolled up for each team
- Find the difference with competing team
- The team with the larger number advances the total difference.
- The team that makes the final dot wins
How to Modify the Game
I hope your preschoolers and kindergarteners enjoyed this game as much as mine. There are so many ways to change the game style to fit your kids interests and needs. These are some simple tweaks to take the game a different direction
- Change the shape of the line based on the holiday
- Use more than 2 dice
- Use dice with more than 6 faces
- Let the winner be the person with the most dots
Let me how you will use this game in the comments.
